CURRENT PROJECTS

  • Facial Expression, Emotion-Speech, and Body-Movement Recognition for Children with ASD
    Summer 2018 – Present

The goal is to develop a Machine Learning approach to detect facial expression, speech, and body-movements using mobile devices and emotion recognition for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  The project entails improving the facial expression from different angles and environmental lighting contrast.  The emotion speech and body motion recognition is based on Machine Learning classification and correlation to the facial expression detection to determine an emotional response. Work is in collaboration with Dr. Maria Resendiz, CCC-SLP. Students: Rezwan M. & Tamima R.

PREVIOUS PROJECTS

  • Weapon Detection with Body-cams
    Spring 2020 – Present

The goal is to develop a Deep Learning – Computer Vision approach to detect dangerous weapons during domestic calls and traffic stops.  The object detection is done in real-time to help officers and the public through safety protocols. Work is in collaboration with Dr. H. Martaindale from the Alerrt Center. Student: Thomas P.

RAPT
Fall 2013 – Present

The Researching Alpine Plant Traits (RAPT) project is an investigation of the responses of alpine plants and their functional traits to climate change in the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland using HPC, ML & Visualization.  The RAPT research project is a collaboration with Dr. Martha E. Apple from Montana Tech.

Houston Toad
Spring 2018 – Present

Houston Toad recovery is a comprehensive monitoring, evaluation, and support program for head-start success using Embedded and Machine Learning techniques. Deep Learning CNN and RNN are used for video and sound detection.   The Toad Call project is a collaboration with the Lab of Dr. Mike Forstner and Dr. Shawn McCracken. Students: Sazida B.I. & Shafinaz I.
